mixing patterns

mixing different prints can be really intimidating, but knowing how to mix and match prints can give you so many more options within your wardrobe. so today im going to put together three outfits with mixed and matched prints and tell you why they work! mixing prints can actually be alot of fun, and give your outfit a fashion forward look.

after this you'll be able to expand the use of your wardrobe without looking like a hot mess! <3

Outfit 1. Stripes and Florals

so this one is easy, because im sure you have something striped and something floral in your wardrobe. did you ever think you could wear them together? well you can!

when mixing prints start with a base for your outfit. here its the striped boatneck shirt. notice the colors. i recomend a white base with either a black or navy stripe. keep the stripes thin so the shirt is not overwhelming.

this striped shirt has navy, so when pairing with a floral skirt, make sure the color navy is in the print so the two patterns have some kind of harmony.

do not add any more pattern to your look. stick to neutral flats or heels and a solid colored bag. you can also add a brown belt to the skirt as well.

adding the neutral and brown shades adds a stability to the two patterns. and navy looks good with brown too. :)

Outfit 2. Animal Prints and Peach Polka dots

so technically animal prints are neutrals so this pattern can be a little more forgiving. however, you still want to make sure your outfit isn't outrageous. so heres how to start.

start with leopard printed skinny jeans. keep your pants fitted so the pattern does not overwhelm your bottom half. printed pants can be hard to wear sometimes, but stick to the brown and black print and keep them fitted and you should be just fine.

next add a peach colored polka dot blouse. make sure the polka dots are not huge as you want this print to be softer than the leopard print. also the type of fabric is something to consider as well. a chiffon blouse adds softness to the look compared to a cotton structured button down. tuck in your shirt and add a belt in a soft brown to break up the two patterns.

your accessories should be neutral as well. reach for a cream blazer, clutch and flats.

when wearing leopard prints, i like gold accessories. so the minimal studding on these shoes is perfect! it adds a touch of glam but since its on the shoes its not so overwhelming.

Outfit 3. Subtle but Fashion Forward.

if you're nervous at all about wearing different prints don't do it in an entire outfit. wear a printed top and add a different printed accessory.

for this last outfit im keeping it subtle. im sticking to a simple black and white patterned blouse.

next pair this with a plain pair of black jeans and a brown belt. make sure to tuck in your shirt for a more polished look.

this outfit is simple and subtle which creates a wonderful base for your outfit. add a striped scarf with color and a colorful cardigan. pick two different but complementary colors. like mustard and navy.

the mustard looks good with black, and the subtle navy color complements the mustard without clashing with black. wrap the scarf around your neck a couple of times so you keep the pattern away from the black pants.

finish off with a pair of black flats to keep the bottom half of your outfit neutral and you'll be good to go.

so now you can mix prints and feel confident, without looking like you got dressed in the dark. its about one or two statement pieces and keeping the rest of your outfit subtle. feel confident in your choices or no matter how or what prints you mix you'll look silly. and remember have fun with it!
